A Dance Installation Piece at Blackfriars, Newcastle upon Tyne
A meeting, and at first a holding off, a fear of the unfamiliar, of the other. Each new arrival is opposed. Each new religion is resisted, until a conversation, a wary dance shows each the other need not threaten, but can offer a way of seeing, a new way of being in the world. Then, what once was foreign becomes familiar, and apprehension softens, east enters into west, and face-to-face a smile of recognition finds a common centre, ourselves reflected in the other.
In the middle of Newcastle two seemingly very different institutions stand face-to-face; Blackfriars, originally the centre for Dominican Christianity and across the road, the Newcastle Chinese community.
